LYNNE DICK, HEAD OF PROGRAMME, JOHN HANSARD GALLERY
I am a South Asian textile artist based in Southampton taking inspiration from my cultural roots exploring my identity, heritage and experience as a diaspora. Growing up in Pakistan and UK influenced my craft practice and ideas, linking traditional designs and contemporary approach.
My projects explore migration, memory and culture, bringing underlying histories and experiences forward, promoting inclusion by sharing marginalised stories. I print silks in bold coloured patterns and layering techniques symbolic to my roots, on fibres to create translucency.
I was highly commended by Society of Dyers and Colours for exceptional craftsmanship, receiving ‘Craft Skills Award’ by MAKE Southwest and a Solo showcase Award from Llantarnam Grange.
PROJECTS
I worked with Historian Professor Priti Mishra; University of Southampton partnered with BBC on South Asian immigrant experience in Southampton. Workshops showed struggles with racism, utilizing BBC archive research and participant drawings I produced silk devore panels, exhibited on Mezzanine level at John Hansard Gallery.
